We have all had the proverbial “This is what Black people need” conversation with our friends, families, and even enemies. However, each time we have these conversations, what is the outcome? Turning on the television or scrolling down your timelines, how many times have you looked at a young Black kid shot dead and your heart aches. How many times have you driven through a predominately Black neighborhood in South Florida, observing actions, activities, and ongoing that makes you feel hopeless on our future?
We can go on and on about what the problems are and how pervasive they have become when it comes to discussing our people and our communities. However, the most important question is, what are we doing about it? At this juncture, our institutions have honestly failed to enact true environmental change, despite their most honest and pure attempts in doing so. I for one, attempted to single handedly change the direction of Black youth, spending my entire 20’s mentoring a group of young people who are now in their 20’s and attending some of the nation’s best schools. I patted myself on the back and thought that was the way to go. How wrong was I. I failed. I did not do what needed to be done. I was not a part of something bigger than me. I had no gang to be a member of. Let’s create that! The Black Superhero Gang will assist us in solving our community’s ills together! We must engage and save our communities in a superhero fashion TOGETHER! Like Batman, Superman, X-Men, and every other superhero, YOU are your community’s superhero. Not NBA stars, not the church, not government, NFL stars, or other entertainers, it’s YOU! If you have ever uttered “They don’t teach our kids Black History”, or “We need to teach our kids to be entrepreneurs”, THEN HERE IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO PUT YOU TIME WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS! We need you to come dressed as your favorite superhero (yes, go out and buy a damn costume) and meet your Superheroes, on February 25, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at 450 NW 14th St, Miami, FL 33136. The following will be what WE will accomplish this day at the park. All we need of you is to show up with your skills and give your time. This is just the beginning!
Pop Up Black History School (10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.)
The Black Superhero Gang members (YOU) will work together in teaching youth and their parents of various ages, Black History. The curriculum will be available the day of, as well as a link of the Black Super Heroes Gang Facebook page. The history will be broken down into different areas, so each hero can choose where he or she would like to teach that day. Attendees will be broken down into small groups and will rotate from area to area. There will be prizes for the kids and each Superhero will be able to provide those prizes at the end of the session. In short, you will be reading with the kids and discussing the awesomeness around being black. No big deal. Only a two-hour commitment!
Young Black Wall Street Initiative (Pitch Competition from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Entrepreneurship has been at the backbone of the African-American/Black experience for hundreds of years. We will come together and teach our youth and their parents how to own and operate their own enterprises. How to be business minded and stray away from undesirable behaviors. Superheroes will form groups amongst each other and work with groups of middle and high school students to develop their business plan a pitch within a two-hour span. Each group will have the opportunity to present to a panel of judges and the winners of the competition will receive $1,000.00 for their concept along with mentorship as a part of the Black Tech Week Community Accelerator and Incubator. There will be a separate section for adults, and Superheroes will work with this population as week for a chance to win $2,000 for their concept along with being admitted to the Black Tech Week Community Accelerator to seriously work with and massage their plan to a deliverable concept. Superheroes of the winning teams will receive AMAZING PRIZES AS WELL.
This is just the beginning of the work of the Black Superheroes Gang. We look forward to seeing you participate at this inaugural event. We will be gearing up to take our communities back by any means necessary. Immediately following the pitch competition, we will have a reception for all our Superheroes as a thank you at a VIP location that evening with a special celebrity guest. We look forward to doing great things for our communities with your help!
