In this role, he leads all diversity, inclusion and workplace fairness strategies across the 200+ countries where Coca-Cola does business, including, but not limited to its Global Women’s Initiative, EEO/Affirmative Action Plan compliance, employee business resource groups (including multiculturals, millennials, LGBT, disabled, military veterans and women), diversity metrics, North America based multicultural employee initiatives and related routines with senior management and the Company’s board of directors. Working with colleagues in philanthropy, supplier diversity, legal, human resources, multicultural marketing and government/media relations, he is responsible for relationships with internal and external stakeholders on inclusion and fairness related initiatives.
Previously, John, who joined the Company in 2002, was the Company’s Senior Managing Compliance and Global Anti-Bribery Counsel responsible for Code of Business Conduct (COBC) compliance leading the COBC integration for Coca-Cola Refreshments following its acquisition by the Company in 2011.
Globally, John also managed the Company’s anti-bribery compliance programs leading training, auditing and internal investigations relating to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and similar anti-corruption laws and regulations, particularly in relation to corruption risks stemming from high profile Company partnerships such as FIFA and the Olympics.
Prior to his compliance role, John was the Company’s chief litigation counsel where he led the global litigation team that managed disputes, internal and government investigations and related counseling throughout the Company and its Board.
From 2005-2011, John led Coca-Cola’s Legal Division Diversity Council (“LDDC”), which he created in 2005. Under the LDDC’s leadership, Coca-Cola legal has built an award-winning supplier diversity program with more than dozens of new WBE/MBE law firms added to the Company’s outside counsel roster. Supplier diversity spending has grown with those same firms nearly eight-fold since 2005.
Additionally, the LDDC administers an annual diversity evaluation for the Company’s large law firms and has created a “Living the Values” diversity award now presented annually to one of Coke’s large firms for leadership, innovative programming and results in diversity and inclusion as well as a host of diversity pipeline and workplace initiatives.
For ten years (1995-2005), John served on the executive committee of the National Bar Association’s (NBA) Commercial Law Section (CLS) (nbacls.com) , including three terms as its Chair, (2000-2003). During his tenure as chair, CLS’ annual Corporate Counsel Conference (CCC) grew to one of the nation’s premier networking and business development conferences for diverse lawyers connecting hundreds of minority business lawyers in private practice with prospective institutional clients. Under John’s leadership, the NBA recognized the CLS as its “Outstanding Section of the Year” for each of the three years that he chaired the CCC.
John is currently on the board of the Private Bank of Buckhead (audit committee member), the GWU Law Alumni Board and is the former chair of the City of Atlanta Board of Ethics.
John holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (with honors) from Morehouse College and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the George Washington University National Law Center.
